Convert a space to a different template or type

Some teams may want to change their space template to enjoy features provided by a different template. Or, you may not need all the bells and whistles and want to simplify how your team track work with a basic template. There are many reasons why a team may want to change their space.

This page explains how to:

  1. Create a new space, ready to receive your current space’s work items.

  2. Find your current space’s work items via the space navigation.

  3. Bulk move your current space’s work items into your new space, effectively changing its template.

This page will be useful to you if:

  • Your team currently works in one type of Jira space or a specific template (like Jira’s company-managed Scrum space or Jira Service Management’s internal service space) and you want to migrate to a different template (like Jira’s team-managed Kanban space or task tracking space).

  • Your team wants to change the way the space is managed.

  • You’ve upgraded and your team wants to use the features of a different Jira app.

Before you begin

You must have the Administer Jira global permission to do the things on this page. Read more about global permissions.

Each Jira app comes with its own space templates. For example, Jira provides Scrum and Kanban templates for teams who work using Agile methodologies. Jira Service Management comes with templates intended to help IT and customer service teams handle their incoming requests. Read more about the types of spaces that come with each Jira product and their features.

Create a new space to receive your team’s work

You’ll need to have a new space available, so that the work items from your current space have a place to go. The first thing to do is create a new, clean space of the desired type.

To create a new space:

  1. Choose Spaces and select a space, or choose View all spaces to visit the spaces directory.

  2. Select Create space.

  3. Choose between a company-managed space or a team-managed space.

  4. Check that the space you’re creating is the right template. If not, select Change template, and select from the templates you have access to. You can switch between company-managed and team-managed space templates using the link at the bottom of the screen.

  5. Enter a name for your new space, and select Create.

You’ve now got a new space ready to receive your team’s work items.

Start the migration process

Now that your new space is ready, you need to find the work items from your current space and move them into the new one. To make bulk changes to work items, you need to filter them using the All work view:

  1. From your space navigation, select All work.

  2. Select the Space filter, and select the space you want to migrate from. (If you're in Advanced searching mode, you need to select Basic.)

  3. In the top-right corner, select More actions (), then Bulk change work items.

We’re merging the All work view with the List. If you can’t see All work in your space navigation, you’re already viewing the new List experience. The features described on this page are relevant for both experiences. Read more about the merge

Bulk move work items into their new home

  1. Select the work items you want to migrate and hit Next.

  2. Select Move work items and hit Next.

  3. On the Select Spaces and Work Types screen, select where the work items from your old space will go. Select a destination space and work type, and hit Next. This is the work type that each work item in your old space will become in the new space.

  4. On the Map Status for Target Space screen, select a destination status for each status in your old space. This is the status that each work item in your team-managed space will take on in the new space.

  5. On the final screen, select Confirm.

Things to keep in mind when you change apps

Things to keep in mind if you migrate from company-managed to team-managed

Team-managed spaces and company-managed spaces are technically quite different, so a few things can break when you migrate from a company-managed software space to a team-managed software space. For example:

  • Epic links and work item links: Any work item links in your company-managed space will not exist in your team-managed space. The work items themselves will still exist, but the links between them won't.

  • Subtasks: All subtasks will be lost in this migration process.

  • Custom fields: These must be recreated in your new team-managed space.

  • Story points estimation: This data will be lost, however you'll be able to start using story points estimation by enabling the estimation feature in your team-managed space.
